'The Yarning Circle' Aboriginal-designed recycled mat in green and white is a practical, cultural teaching tool

Designed by innovative Australian Aboriginal artist De Greer Yindimincarlie, of the Wiradjuri Nation in central New South Wales, this recycled plastic, reversible floor mat includes a range of different Aboriginal symbols. Can you see men and women? Children? Emu or kangaroo tracks? How about digging tools, boomerangs and coolamons? Introduce children to the world of storytelling through symbolism, which is a central part of Aboriginal art.

De Greer Yindimincarlie describes her design: "I draw my men sitting towards the fire as they sit with their legs outstretched towards the campfire, and I draw my women facing away from the fire, as they sit with their legs tucked under their bottoms, hence the facing way… I draw them like that because that's the way I was taught the symbols, and the way I have always drawn and taught the symbols to others."

These mats are a great way to bring diversity education into the school or early learning environment in fun and engaging ways. Make cultural stories a part of everyday life by using these mats for story time or as somewhere to sit for lunch or recess. Consider using them in conjunction with other resources such as 'The Little Black Game Pack' (designed by the same artist) to enhance the learning experience by extending the group’s interest in symbols. See how Recycled Mat's Indigenous designs can meet the outcomes of the Educational Curriculum

The 'Yarning Circle' mat is reversible, which gives you two looks for the price of one, and also extends the life of your mat. Pair these with a selection of our Aboriginal cushion covers to inject some more colour, culture and comfort. Perfect for a chill-out reading corner!

Like all our recycled outdoor mats, The Yarning Circle is durable and easy to clean, as well as comfortable to sit on or walk on. Sand and grass simply shake off, and any heavier soiling can be wiped down or hosed off. The large size makes it a great space for gathering a class group or extended family, indoors or outdoors.

Importantly, every Indigenous-designed mat you buy from Recycled Mats has been created in consultation with Aboriginal artists and their communities. They feature authentic designs and symbols that are culturally appropriate for sharing in the wider community.

We're now exploring how we can 're-recycle' your unwanted mats! Our exciting initiative for re-purposing and re-using them is a must-read.
