Joongarrabah is a peak that overlooks the Tweed and Gold Coast Region and is an iconic landmark that is a vital part of the local cultural landscape
For many generations, this special place has been significant in the teaching of “Garrima”, or 'respect'.
2018 Commonwealth Games – Commissioned Design
In collaboration with Recycled Mats, the mat design was also part of a specially commissioned series for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 to celebrate the coming together of nations from across the globe to partake in sport, culture, art and entertainment.
The Garrima design was created to promote the beauty, culture and traditions of the local Indigenous people of the Gold Coast.
The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018 team was instrumental in their work to highlight Indigenous culture across the entire competition, with Indigenous art and design featured on uniforms, on the Games Mascot Borobi, on the flags, posters and signage, and in homewares and interior design in the Commonwealth Games 2018 Festivals & Events spaces.
We are honoured to have played a part in this process and are thrilled that our collaborations with local artists were highlighted in such a public space. Our eye-catching Garrima recycled plastic mats were featured in the "Jarjum" (meaning, "All our children") Learning & Play Space at the Commonwealth Games, and also in the VIP Green Room.
Designed by local Fingal artist Christine Slabb, the 'Garrima' cultural mats were a roaring success in the space, and we received lots of enquiries about them from visitors and spectators. We adore this addition to the Recycled Plastic Mats range and its modern take on ancient wisdom.
Like the majority of our recycled plastic mats, 'Garrima' is a reversible mat, so you've two choices on how to display your mat on picnics, camping and caravan holidays, outings, and days on the beach. They are super lightweight and easy to store too. Check out our video on how to fold a round recycled plastic mat!

We're now exploring how we can 're-recycle' your unwanted mats! Our exciting initiative for re-purposing and re-using them is a must-read.
