'Journeys' is an Australian-designed recycled mat in rich burgundy and white, with a striking design – perfect for home, play or education
It was created by Australian Aboriginal artist De Greer Yindimincarlie, of the Wiradjuri Nation in central New South Wales, and depicts tribal journeys between campsites. Symbols include men, women, campsites and travel routes, with different communities separate but interconnected.
The Journeys design allows you to bring diversity education into your early learning centre, library or playroom with ease. People of all ages can learn more about their own and other cultures while they read, eat or play on a colourful indoor or outdoor rug. Like all our Aboriginal & Tiwi Island mats, it’s a handy introduction to Indigenous symbolism in art, and opens us up to the world of storytelling through pictures. See how Recycled Mat's Indigenous designs can meet the outcomes of the Educational Curriculum.
It is made from recycled polypropylene plastic (think plastic bags, drink and medicine bottles). These mats ensure you are celebrating the planet as well as multiculturalism. The Journeys mat is light enough to carry or fold up for transport or storage, so you can move it from your art space or reading corner to a shady spot outside at lunchtime. It's soft and comfortable, but equally sturdy.
Want to change up your look for the day, or keep your class on their toes? This mat is reversible so you can enjoy two different colour combinations! Consider using it in conjunction with other cultural resources such as The Little Black Game Pack (designed by the same artist) to extend learning in areas such as culture, nature, family life or art. Like all our outdoor mats, this unique Aboriginal-designed recycled mat can be used in so many settings such as camping, playing, a reading corner, group time or picnicking.
We're now exploring how we can 're-recycle' your unwanted mats! Our exciting initiative for re-purposing and re-using them is a must-read.
